Without much surprise given his lack of preparation on the grass, Gaël Monfils announced Thursday his withdrawal for the Wimbledon tournament, which begins on Monday. The French n°1 explains in a press release published on Twitter that he recommended training this week (he suffered from the right heel and had also had to cancel at Roland-Garros) but wants to give himself time to get back in better shape. .
“I will now be able to gradually increase my training and spend more time on the court to get back in shape, both physically and tennis-wise”, writes Monfils.
“Because I have recently returned to training and the demanding grass and best-of-five matches, my team and I have decided not to play Wimbledon this year. I will rather focus on my preparation in order to be ready for the summer. »
The Frenchman, currently 23rd in the world, adds that he will resume competition in Hamburg (July 18-24) then line up in Kitzbühel (July 25-30) before flying off for the American tour.
