Google is concerned that its employees are not working hard enough. During the last weekly meeting of the company, its CEO Sundar Pichai called on his teams to focus on their projects and customers, while distributing a survey to better their opinion on possible management improvements. This statement follows a sharp decline in growth in the second quarter of the fiscal year.
Last Tuesday, Google unveiled rather disappointing financial results for the second quarter of its fiscal year. Indeed, its growth fell to 13%, against 62% last year at the same period. Although the company then took advantage of the reopening of businesses following the various containment measures, this drop remains brutal and the Mountain View firm intends to raise the bar.
This is the message sent by Sundar Pichai, CEO of the company, to his employees during an internal meeting last Wednesday. The latter was very clear: the main objective for the next few months is to increase the productivity of the teams. In other words, the projects are currently not progressing fast enough for his liking. He thus wishes “create a culture that is more mission-driven, more focused on our products, more focused on the customer” and “think about how we can minimize distractions”.

Sundar Pichai called on his employees to work “with greater urgency” and “more aggressiveness”. In addition, the CEO recently announced that Google is about to slow down the pace of its hiring. In order not to leave anything to chance, Sundar Pichai also presented a new initiative called “Simplicity Sprint”. Behind this name hides neither more nor less than a survey, aimed at encouraging the opinion of employees on the best practices to be applied to increase productivity.
“What would help you work more clearly and effectively to serve our users and customers? Where are we trying to remove barriers to get better results faster? How do we eliminate waste and stay enterprising and focused as we grow? » are all questions that can be found in the said document.
Note that this initiative comes in a tense period internally for Google, when many employees fear a wave of layoffs, while it is still extremely complicated to meet in a union.
