remember, March 2020, France discovers covid 19, here we are confined, confronted with this virus of which we don’t know much yet. The first French patients were those who fell while traveling, first from China, then from other countries. It is also the time when, every evening, in Yonne as everywhere in France, at 8 p.m. we go to the window to applaud and pay tribute to the health personnel who are struggling to treat those who are affected. by the coronavirus.
Christy Love, is a 74-year-old New Yorker, settled in Yonne for many years, after having followed her husband from Icaun. In March 2020, when she returned from a trip abroad, she had body aches, high fevers, her state of health was so worrying that she was taken to the emergency room of the Auxerre hospital. She does not know it yet, but it is covid 19. Christy will be followed a few days later by her husband, who has also contracted covid, she will spend a fortnight in the service intended to treat victims of coronavirus .
Christy is not the style to complain, not a woman who lets herself go to lose her spirits either, but in this period, and while her daughter, Marie is in Los Angeles, she is accompanied, pampered by the hospital nursing staff. Christy who remembers this period perfectly and the caregivers who took care of her: “It’s always wonderful in a hospital to have people who are attentive, who are friendly and there, they were great… I never saw a face that was a little bit bleak, they were always in good spirits, really heroic.”
Two years ago everyone applauded them, today they continued their work, often away from the spotlight, except for Christy Love and Marie Sadron, the mother and daughter who have not forgotten and who have therefore published Love cooks to give the benefits of this cookbook to those who were on the front lines of the fight against covid. It will therefore be for a service at the Auxerre hospital, but why compile these family recipes? Perhaps because of a plum pie with crumble, made in the kitchens of the Auxerre hospital and which left a very good memory for Christy. And Christy, the kitchen, she knows, Marie her daughter too, she who during the first confinement in 2020 is a chef at home in Los Angeles.. Then everything becomes obvious, this passion for cooking, it will be the tool to make the Auxerre hospital staff.
A few homemade recipes, a roast chicken with sautéed potatoes, Madame Love’s famous chocolate mousse, her soups, her dishes in sauce. traditional family recipes, simple but terribly good: “no one has ever complained” explains the New Yorker humorously, Marie, her daughter, confirms and concludes: “it made us super happy to do it like that, it’s which actually motivated us not to do it for us, well we do it for us too, we are happy to have all these recipes compiled, but let it be for the hospital”.
